View Project

GAPP Architects & Urban Designers, partnering with RHDHV, Kyamandi, and Turner Townsend, played a pivotal role in shaping the Gauteng Industrial Development Zone (GIDZ) project. Through in-depth land studies, urban design and architectural concepts were developed to optimize spatial utilization for the Special Economic Zone (SEZ). GAPP's expertise extended to establishing a robust operational framework within the zone.

The GIDZ initiative, cantered around the OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA), aimed to boost economic growth by leveraging the Industrial Development Zone (IDZ) mechanism. Spearheaded by the Gauteng Growth and Development Agency (GGDA) and its subsidiary, the Gauteng Industrial Development Zone Company (‘Gauteng IDZ’), the project supported export-focused manufacturing and processing sectors. The focus was on attracting both domestic and foreign-based companies interested in setting up high-value, low-mass manufacturing facilities to enhance South Africa’s exports.

Extensive studies, encompassing contextual analysis and international case studies, informed the development framework. This framework covered various aspects, including movement and circulation, site layout, building typologies, security measures, and sustainable practices. The goal was to create an environment conducive to economic growth and innovation.

The detailed development manual outlined architectural elements, landscaping, access points, signage, security, and energy efficiency measures. It emphasized an environmentally responsible approach, incorporating wastewater management, water harvesting, and energy-efficient practices.

The project’s socio-economic impact, including economic benefits and job creation potential, was assessed through a comprehensive impact model. The business case emphasized the positive contributions to the local, provincial, and national economies.

GAPP Architects & Urban Designers, alongside its partners, played a central role in transforming the GIDZ project into a model of sustainable economic development, promoting innovation, and driving collaborative prosperity in the region.
