The @fig_tree_farm_hillcrest Padel Court project aimed to integrate a modern facility into the farm’s historic, rustic setting. Established in 1896 and opened to the public in 2020, Fig Tree Farm is a popular community hub in Hillcrest, offering eateries, retail stores, and event spaces. The addition of four padel courts, opened on June 29, 2024, enhances the farm`s appeal by introducing a rapidly growing sport.
Set on Hillcrest’s rolling hills, the courts are arranged to blend with the landscape, creating interesting spaces between them. The courts incorporate natural materials and muted tones that contrast with the sleek glass surfaces, complementing the farm’s aesthetic.
The roofs, inspired by barn structures, feature translucent polycarbonate sheeting, giving the courts a light, ethereal quality while respecting the farm’s traditional character. Rob Meek Memorial Installation The Pierhead - Victoria & Alfred V&A Waterfront We were deeply moved as we came together to honor the legacy of Rob Meek, a true visionary whose work continues to inspire. As Andrew Flint from GAPP Architects so eloquently put it, "We are here to reflect on the ideas and energy Rob left with us and to be rejuvenated on our own life journeys." Thank you to everyone who made this moment special, especially Di, Claudia, and Louise for bringing us together in celebration of Rob`s life—a life lived to the fullest. Here`s to the memories, the inspiration, and the journeys ahead.
video tribute honoring the profound legacy of Rob Meek
Together with the family of the late Rob Meek, a founding director of GAPP, Rob’s visionary approach helped transform @vandawaterfront from a working harbor into a world-class destination, blending maritime charm with innovative urban design.
The video, titled Front of the Water, explores the rich history and development of the V&A Waterfront through interwoven narratives: the importance of water as a precious resource, the ongoing design process that shaped the Waterfront, and Rob Meek’s remarkable influence. He often drafted urban plans while out at sea, integrating his experiences on the water into his designs. His understanding of the interplay between land and sea led to the creation of spaces that not only catered to foot traffic but also embraced the dynamics of the marine environment.
Today celebrated Rob’s legacy as both a top yachtsman and a pioneering urban designer. His work at the V&A Waterfront stands as a testament to his belief that waterfronts should remain working harbors, rich in history and maritime heritage. The installation of a new bench at the Pierhead, designed to mimic yacht decking, serves as a physical tribute to Rob’s life and work, inviting visitors to experience the Waterfront through his eyes.
To learn more about GAPP & Rob Meek’s impact on the V&A Waterfront and his passion for both architecture and sailing, watch the video https://www.waterfront.co.za/rob-meek-bench/ and explore the story behind the creation of this fitting tribute to a man who shaped one of Cape Town’s most beloved spaces.
@singita_ Ebony Lodge, located in the heart of the @sabisabireserve , has been thoughtfully reimagined to blend its rich #heritage with a fresh, #nature -centered design. The recent redesign, led by GAPP, Hesse Kleinloog Studio , and Cecile & Boyd`s, focused on enhancing the lodge’s connection to its stunning surroundings while preserving its timeless elegance. The main lodge area has been opened up to improve flow and bring the outdoors in, with new features like a bar-deli and a tented pavilion in the dining area that create a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces.
The updated interiors reflect a modern take on traditional #safari elements, using natural materials such as #timber, #linen, and #adobe to create a soothing, authentic atmosphere. The design balances contemporary lines with earthy textures, ensuring a luxurious yet grounded feel throughout. With enhanced communal spaces, a dedicated Conservation Room, and refreshed suites, the lodge now offers an even more immersive and intimate guest experience, deeply connected to the #african landscape.
This thoughtful evolution of Singita Ebony Lodge not only honours its past but also sets the stage for a new era of luxury #ecotourism, where the beauty of nature and the importance of conservation take centre stage.
The @thewinchester_hotel in Cape Town, marking its centenary, has undergone a major renovation. Originally built in 1922 and transformed into a hotel by the Harvey family in 1958, the hotel faced structural issues that required extensive updates to meet modern standards. Creative director @mardremeyer and the @sourceiba team preserved its unique story while adding contemporary touches. The hotel, located across from the @seapoint_promenade , now features modern amenities while retaining its iconic elements like the #hexagon tiled courtyard, #artnouveau fountain and sea-facing terrace. Reopened in late 2022, the Winchester continues to be a cherished landmark for #capetonians and visitors alike.

Fittingly named “the space below the clouds,” Loapi features six tented safari homes strategically spread across the foothills of the Korannaberg mountains, each offering breathtaking views of the reserve’s arid savannah. Tswalu, an ambitious conservation project, emphasizes sustainable habitat preservation and biodiversity restoration. This low-impact, sustainable model of tourism supports Tswalu’s mission to improve the natural world. Inspired by the nomadic and environmentally conscious spirit of camping, Loapi keeps guests immersed in the stunning wilderness through panoramic windows, shaded outdoor decks, and the use of sustainable, locally sourced materials.
